Brick & Stone Cleaning

Our brick and stone cleaning service is designed to remove unwanted deposits while respecting the characteristics of the underlying material. We work on residential and commercial buildings, boundary walls, architectural features and other suitable masonry surfaces — including sandstone, limestone, granite and a variety of brick types.

What is brick and stone cleaning, and who is it for?

Brickwork and natural stone are durable building materials, but their appearance can become affected by atmospheric pollution, biological growth, carbon deposits and other forms of staining.

Different materials react differently to moisture, cleaning chemicals and pressure, making specialist knowledge particularly important.

Our brick and stone cleaning service is designed to remove unwanted deposits while respecting the characteristics of the underlying material.

We work on residential and commercial buildings, boundary walls, architectural features and other suitable masonry surfaces, including sandstone, limestone, granite and a variety of brick types.

Our focus is always on achieving the best possible cleaning result without causing unnecessary damage to the masonry.

Common causes of masonry contamination

  • Atmospheric pollution and carbon deposits — including historic black carbon staining on older stone.
  • Biological growth — algae, mould and lichen.
  • Mineral staining and efflorescence.
  • General environmental contamination.

Relevant surfaces and materials

  • Sandstone.
  • Limestone.
  • Granite.
  • A variety of brick types and traditional lime mortar.

Our cleaning methods, equipment and chemicals

The correct cleaning method depends on the masonry's composition, age, condition and type of contamination.

We assess these factors before choosing from a range of specialist techniques, which may include:

  • Low-pressure steam cleaning: Heated water systems for removing suitable atmospheric and biological deposits.
  • Controlled pressure washing: Where the masonry and pointing are sufficiently sound.
  • Softwashing: Chemical treatment of algae, mould and other biological growth.
  • Specialist masonry detergents: Products selected for particular types of surface contamination.
  • Targeted chemical cleaning: Carefully chosen treatments for carbon deposits, mineral staining and other difficult contaminants.

Particular care is required with softer natural stones, older brickwork and traditional lime mortar, which can be vulnerable to inappropriate pressure or chemical treatments.

We may recommend a small test area before proceeding with more extensive cleaning.

Why method selection matters

Some natural stones are relatively soft, and excessive pressure can erode their surface. Powerful, concentrated water jets can damage mortar joints, remove weathered stone and leave visible cleaning marks.

A chemical that works well on one material could cause irreversible staining or damage to another. Specialist cleaning requires an understanding of both the material and the contaminant.

More pressure doesn't automatically mean better cleaning. The aim is to remove unwanted contamination while preserving the stone beneath it.

What to expect and recommended cleaning frequency

Professional cleaning can substantially improve the appearance of contaminated masonry and reveal natural colours and textures that have been obscured over time.

However, some staining may have penetrated deeply, and historic weathering or previous surface damage may remain visible after cleaning.

Our aim is to clean the masonry safely rather than promise an unrealistic return to its original condition.

Recommended frequency: Usually on a condition-led basis rather than a fixed schedule. Many properties may only require significant cleaning every 5–10 years or longer, depending on environment, material and exposure.

Maintenance and aftercare

  • Cleaning is usually condition-led rather than scheduled. We assess and recommend treatment when the masonry justifies it.
  • Where appropriate, preventative treatments can help slow biological regrowth.
  • We highlight visible defects or concerns that may need attention from a specialist.
