Render Cleaning

Our professional render cleaning service restores the appearance of rendered buildings without relying on aggressive pressure washing. We clean a wide variety of rendered surfaces — including silicone, monocouche, acrylic and traditional cement-based renders — selecting a cleaning process appropriate to the type and condition of the render.

What is render cleaning, and who is it for?

Over time, rendered surfaces can become discoloured by algae, mould, lichen, atmospheric pollution and general environmental contamination. These deposits can leave buildings looking tired, with unsightly green, red or black staining.

Our professional render cleaning service restores the appearance of rendered buildings without relying on aggressive pressure washing.

We clean a wide variety of rendered surfaces, including silicone, monocouche, acrylic and traditional cement-based renders. Whether it's a residential property, commercial building or larger managed development, we select a cleaning process appropriate to the type and condition of the render.

Common causes of render discolouration

  • Biological growth — green algae, red biological staining, mould, lichen and other microorganisms.
  • Atmospheric pollution and environmental dirt.
  • Moisture, shade and exposure — particularly north-facing or tree-shaded elevations.
  • General environmental contamination.

Relevant surfaces and materials

  • Silicone render systems.
  • Monocouche through-coloured render.
  • Acrylic render systems.
  • Traditional cement-based render.

Our cleaning methods, equipment and chemicals

Different render systems require different approaches. Before starting work, we assess the surface, identify the likely causes of discolouration and select the most appropriate cleaning treatment.

Our preferred approach is generally softwashing, using specialist cleaning solutions to treat biological contamination without exposing delicate rendered surfaces to unnecessary pressure.

Depending on the surface and contamination, our methods may include:

  • Specialist biocidal treatments to control algae, mould and other biological growth.
  • Carefully controlled sodium hypochlorite-based solutions where appropriate for the render system.
  • Low-pressure application and rinsing equipment.
  • Specialist detergents and targeted treatments for atmospheric pollution and other staining.

High-pressure cleaning is generally avoided on delicate render systems because it can damage the surface or compromise the finish.

Why method selection matters

Not all render systems are the same. Silicone, acrylic, monocouche and traditional cement-based renders have different properties and tolerances.

A method that might be acceptable on one surface could cause serious damage to another. Concentrated high-pressure water jets can physically score, erode or remove textured finishes — damage that cannot simply be washed away.

That is why identifying the render system before selecting a cleaning method is so important. The correct method removes the contamination while preserving the render's original appearance and texture.

What to expect and recommended cleaning frequency

Many rendered surfaces show a substantial improvement immediately after cleaning. Where a longer-acting biocidal treatment is used, some remaining biological discolouration may continue to diminish over the following weeks.

The longevity of the results depends on the property's orientation, location, surrounding vegetation, exposure to moisture and the type of render.

Recommended frequency: Typically only once every few years. Some south-facing elevations can take 10 years+ to become dirty, but heavily shaded, damp or particularly exposed elevations may require more frequent maintenance.

We can also recommend preventative treatments to help slow the return of biological growth.

Maintenance and aftercare

  • Following a professional clean, we generally recommend having the render assessed and treated when its condition justifies it — rather than unnecessary annual cleaning.
  • Appropriate preventative treatments can help delay biological regrowth.
  • Keeping surrounding vegetation trimmed and gutters clear can reduce moisture and shade that encourage biological growth.
